GD helps families cook healthy meals with the help of Michelin star chef Atul Kochhar!

During our Emergency Coronovirus Appeal, we had numerous calls on our phone line from families asking for groceries for them to feed their families with. Due to the high demand for groceries, we started distributing ration kits to low-income families, with each of these providing them with a week of meals.

We wanted to make sure that each of the families was making the most of the ingredients we provided, and they were encouraged to cook through recipe cards which we gave alongside the kits.

We also had the opportunity to work with Michelin star awarded chef Atul Kochhar, who has several award-winning restaurants in London. He created a tutorial for us, for a delicious recipe of Mirchiwale Aloo Mutter (potato and pea curry) as an example of a recipe that people can cook for under £1! The recipe uses just peas, potatoes, onion and canned tomatoes, which can all be purchased for under £1.

We believe that it’s so important for families to eat healthy meals together, not only to ensure they maintain a healthy lifestyle but to also ensure the children can concentrate in school and create the best future for themselves. 1 in 10 school children eats no fruit or vegetables daily when government guidelines suggest that 5 portions should be eaten per day. (British Nutrition Foundation.) It is vital that parents are encouraged to feed their children fruit and vegetables every day, and the simple recipes we provide give them a good start to doing this.
