World Children’s Day: India’s Literacy Rate, Mental Growth, and Go Dharmic’s 100 Libraries

-By Thomas Greengrass

This World Children’s Day, there will be lots of celebrating, lots of laughter and lots of happy parents looking at their children’s bright futures. At Go Dharmic, though, we’re going to hone in on those whose future’s are less secure, those who can’t read, write, or lack access to literary materials.

“In 2018, the degree of literacy in India was about 74.4 percent”, which is still far below the estimated global average at 86 percent for those aged 15 and over. (Source)

Raising this literacy rate is pivotal for the development and future of these children. In this regard, Go Dharmic has been a trailblazer, supporting literacy by building over a hundred libraries throughout India and Nepal.

Through their campaign, Shape-A-Future, they have provided reading materials and dedicated locations for children to learn and study with. Through your further donations, they will continue to build libraries and try to build the literacy rate, as well as these children’s potential.

The capacity to read and write is something most of us take for granted, to the point that we struggle to conceive of anyone who can’t. But, the reality is that there are still so many children worldwide who are functionally illiterate. We must eschew cliches, but these children are the future! Every person is endowed with a mind and it is a travesty to leave it underdeveloped.

To learn, appreciate and understand, lie at the core of our humanity. And, the ability to read and write marked the turning point in humanity’s history. It allowed us to have conversations across ages and locations, as well as provide us with intellectual immortality.

What a glory it is for our ideas to have a life of their own beyond us. To deny children these mighty gifts to children is worse than a shame, it is a disgrace.

This World Children’s Day, let’s celebrate Go Dharmic’s 100 libraries and work to increase this number. Support Go Dharmic’s campaign to protect a child’s right to flourish!
