The 2nd of October 2019 marked the 150th anniversary since Mahatma Gandhi’s birth. Mahatma Gandhi was a great force for goodness and compassion in the world and team Go Dharmic was sure we had to celebrate it! His words and teachings are very influential in many of the campaigns and projects that we plan.
With the effects of climate change and global warming becoming increasingly evident, Gandhi’s teachings are more relevant than ever in the modern world.
‘Earth provides enough to provide for every man’s needs, but not every man’s greed’
Mahatma Gandhi
We began our day by joining Nitin Sonewane, who has been walking around the world for the past 3 years for world peace. When he walked from the Gandhi statue in Traviscot Square, Euston, to the Gandhi statue in Parliament Square. Along the way, we stopped at many influential places, such as India House and Downing Street before reaching Parliament Square. Here we were met by a cross-party group of MP’s and flowers were laid at the statue.

It was inspiring to see how influential members of the UK Parliament, including Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi, had so many kind words about how Gandhi’s teachings are still relevant in the world today, and how non-violence can solve many world issues.

Later that day we held our event ‘Gandhian Values In The Modern World: Celebrating the 150th Birth Anniversary.’ The event was held at the stunning Guildhall, which is one of London’s oldest and most historic buildings. Thank you to our organizing partners Bridge India for arranging the venue. The evening included talks from 3 guest speakers; Nitin Sonowane, Nicholas Sutton and Hemal Randerwala.

Nitin Sonewane spoke about his journey across the world, and how Gandhi’s teachings helped him to find his purpose in life. He was once in a successful mechanics role but felt he needed to do more than working a 9 to 5 job. Therefore, he quit his job and went to live with some monks, before starting his journey around the world, spreading the message of peace and non-harming.

Nicholas Sutton spoke about his research into the meaning of dharma and shared insightful passages from the Bhagavad Gita among other sacred texts. He also spoke about his visits to India, his first being when he was only 18, and the inspirational people he met along the way.

Hemal Randerwala, the founder of Go Dharmic, spoke about the work that we are doing, and how people can get involved. He shared stories of how our work has positively impacted lives and our plans for the future.

The evening was a great success and we received a large amount of positive feedback from all those who attended. We’d like to thank the Bridge India team for helping to organise it. We would also like to thank all who joined us on the day and to pay tribute to the Mahatma Gandhi.
