Compassion, Service, and Devotion

Please join Hanuman Dass and Eddie Stern for an evening of stories, discussion, and chanting, centered on how devotion extends into service, and are all fueled by compassion to relieve suffering, individual and communal. According to the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali (1.33), one way to bring brightness and clarity to the mind and increase serenity is to practice compassion (karuna) in the face of suffering. Compassion means ”shared feeling,” a level of sympathy so deep that it allows one to be present with pain, and then engage in actions to alleviate pain and sorrow. Forgiveness, according to some, is the ultimate expression of compassion. But the true test of compassion may be whether or not you can also extend it to yourself (self-compassion).

This talk will explore concepts of compassion and dharma and how selfless acts of service can help us find peace & purpose. Hanuman and Eddie will share their thoughts on how to center oneself in the space of the heart in order to be kinder to all living beings and live a fulfilled, connected inner and outer life.

Eddie Stern is a Yoga instructor, author, and researcher from NYC. He began practicing Yoga in New York in 1987. He is engaged in non-profit work providing access to Yoga for underserved youth in public education and those at risk of gun violence in inner cities. He is currently earning a master’s degree in science for Yoga research and runs the Broome Street Ganesh Temple in NYC, where he manages the day-to-day activities of the temple, as well as teaching the various branches of yoga. Eddie is the author of the best-selling book One Simple Thing, a New Look at the Science of Yoga and How it can Transform Your Life and the creator of The Breathing App and Yoga365.

Hanuman Dass (born Hemal Randerwala) is the founder and Chairman of Go Dharmic, an international humanitarian movement for compassion in action, inspired by the philosophy of dharma. He established Go Dharmic 11 years ago, motivated by a desire to perform a small act of compassion by feeding the homeless in London. What began as a small group of friends distributing a box of fruit has now become a movement. Thousands more people have joined the effort and today over 11 million meals have been distributed to vulnerable people through an energetic campaign with a mission to Love all, Feed all, Serve all. He has, to date, established four registered charities and is engaging more than 10,000 volunteers in over 180 locations around the world.
